The Japan America Society of Iowa is home to the only taiko drumming group in central Iowa. Hear them prepare for the annual CelebrAsian festival.



ALYX: EVERY WEEKEND, THE ROOMS OF THE FRANKLIN JUNIOR DES MOINES HIGH SCHOOL ARE FILLED WITH THE ANCIENT SOUNDS OF TAIKO DRUMMING. THIS IS WHERE SOTEN TAIKO, CENTRAL IOWA’S ONLY TAIKO GROUP, PRACTICES. THE GROUP IS PART OF THE JANAP AMERICA SOCIETY OF IOWA. KCCI HAS STOPPED AS THEY PREPARE FOR THEIR ANNUAL PERFORMANCE AT THE NEXT CELEBRASIAN FESTIVAL ♪ >> MANY PEOPLE WANT LRNEA ABOUT OTHER CULTURES AND WE FEEL LIKE WE HAVE THIS OBLIGATION SINCE WE HAVE THIS PASSION FOR THE MUSIC TO INTRODUCE JAPANESE DRUMS. THE APPROPRIATE TERM FOR IT IS KUMI-DAIKO WHICH WAS CREATED IN THE 19’5 YEARS BY DAI GATICH AGUCHI, HE WAS THE FOUNDER, HE WAS A JAZZ MUSICIAN WHO CAMUPED WITH THE IDEA OF HAVING ALL THESE DIFFERENT SIZES OF TAIKO BATTERY AND CREATE SOMETHING NEW. >> SOTEN TAIKO IS FOUNDED AS AN AWARENESS MEANS FOR JASI. TAIKO IS VERY IMPORTANT TO JAPANESE CULTURE SO AS PART OF THE JAPAN AMERICAN SOCIETY OF IOWA, WE ARE FOCUSED ON RAISING AWARENESS AND EXPANDING JAPANESE CULRETU THROUGHOUT IOWA. SO THIS IS OUR MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO INTRODUCE PEOPLE TO THIS PT OF JAPANESE CULTURE WHO DON’T HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE ELSEWHERE, WE ARE THE ONLY GROUP IN IOWA. >> WE GO TO MULTICULTURAL EVENTS, WE REPRESENT JAPANESE CULTURE. TAIKO DRUMMING HAS BEEN A VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT OF JAPANESE CULTURES AND FESTIVALS SWEO PERFORMS AND REPRESENTS THAT AND GIVE THAT SENSE TO MANY COMMUNITIES IN IOWA. ♪ >> EVERY MULTICULTURAL EVENT, WE REPRESENT JAPAN WITH TAIKO DRUMMING. >> I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE TO EXPERIENCE AS MUCH CULTURE AS THEY CAN, THIS IS WHAT MAKES US GROW AS A COMMUNITY AS A PEOPLE. Every weekend, the halls of Franklin Junior High School in Des Moines are filled with the ancient sounds of taiko drumming. This is where Soten Taiko, the only taiko drumming group in central Iowa, practices. The group is part of the Japan America Society of Iowa. KCCI stopped by as they prepared for their annual performance at the CelebrAsian Festival. The 2022 CelebrAsian Festival will take place May 27-28 in Western Gateway Park.
